These Petals Fly by Jackie Slanley and NeoGrowths by Garret Kane

Curated by Tessa Krieg July 29th - August 28th

11 Newel Gallery is pleased to present an exhibit that explores the relationship between organic and artificial forms as they come together in a unified geometry and blur our distinction between ‘natural’ and ‘synthetic.’

These Petals Fly, by Jackie Slanley recontextualizes flora, fauna and monstera, all set ablaze in a world on fire. Slanley tells her story through natural forms in three-dimensional collages made of industrial elements. The play of symmetry, reflection and translucence appear as organic shapes floating in the air.

NeoGrowths by Garret Kane takes a different approach to merging organic with man-made and computer generated forms. In his work, pieces of wood, shaped by decades of erosion are reassembled using graph-like nerve structures as joints. These complex latticeworks of inorganic materials are further explored in a series of animated NFTs.

These Petals Fly by Jackie Slanley

These Petals Fly is a solo exhibit of the most recent sculptures by Jackie Slanley. Jackie Slanley is a first-generation Vietnamese American artist living in Brooklyn NY.

The current genesis of Slanley’s work utilizes laser-cut Plexiglass as a mode of storytelling. Recontextualizing archived flora, fauna, monstera, and environments, the pieces, set ablaze, represent a world on fire. Each layer of Plexiglass is cut and fastened together with bolts and screws on mechanical wall mounts. Resembling paint diluted with turpentine, a film-like gradient is built up with many layers of tinted transparencies, making each color glow from within. Using vectors to create original pieces of digital imagery, Slanley directly pulls from patterns of symbols and language repeated throughout storytelling across cultures.

NeoGrowths by Garret Kane

NeoGrowths is an exhibition showcasing the recent sculptures and NFTs of Garret Kane exploring the union and division between the natural and virtual. The NeoGrowths series illustrates the synthesis of nature's volatility and potential.

Various species of wood from Indonesia and the United States were 3D scanned using photogrammetry and structured light to produce digital replicas. Integrated within the negative spaces, nerve-like mesh, known as plexus geometry, are generated and printed using stereolithographic resin printers. Each NFT is animated using intricately webbed geometric algorithms to suggest the movement within each resin plexus.
